En aquest Espai Històric de la Pobla de Massaluca us oferim descobrir tot un entorn fortificat que forma part de la línia defensiva dels Algars, on s’han rehabilitat els camins i senders per tal d’oferir als visitants un recorregut a peu pels camins que van seguir els soldats republicans al llarg de la Batalla de l’Ebre. Tot passejant podreu descobrir les trinxeres, refugis i fortificacions que van servir d’aixopluc a una generació de combatents.

L’any 1937, la Generalitat republicana, preveient la caiguda del Front d’Aragó, va ordenar la construcció d’una línia fortificada per protegir el territori català d’una possible invasió franquista. A la Terra Alta, aquesta línia es coneix amb el nom de la Línia de l’Algars, que seguint el curs d’aquest riu, protegeix la comarca de sud a nord amb diferents posicions elevades i fortificades a Caseres, Batea, Vilalba dels Arcs i la Pobla de Massaluca.

Amb la caiguda del front d’Aragó i el ràpid avanç franquista del març de 1938, els soldats republicans van passar de llarg aquesta posició i es van resguardar de l’enemic a la riba dreta del riu Ebre, permeten a l’exèrcit revoltat arribar al mar per Vinaròs el 14 d’abril.

La nit del 25 de juliol de 1938, s’inicià la Batalla de l’Ebre, els soldats republicans van creuar el riu Ebre amb l’objectiu de recuperar la iniciativa i reduir la pressió que l’exèrcit de Franco duia a terme sobre València. El front s’estabilitzà a les portes de Gandesa i Vilalba dels Arcs, ocupant les posicions de la línia dels Algars a Vilalba i a la Pobla.

El front entre Vilalba i la Pobla va quedar estable durant tota la batalla, fins la darrera ofensiva franquista del 30 d’octubre, quan els soldats republicans que la defensaven van rebre l’ordre de replegar-se cap X Ascó per tal de tornar a la riba dreta de l’Ebre i donar per acabada la batalla el 16 de novembre de 1938. Durant la batalla, aquest va ser un sector inactiu, però tot i això s’hi va produir algun intercanvi de foc entre les posicions republicanes i franquistes.

L’entorn de la Punta del Duc esdevé especial per dos factors. En primer lloc s’hi poden trobar les fortificacions de la línia dels Algars. I en segon lloc, al ser un sector poc actiu, els soldats republicans van destinar una part important del seu temps, al llarg dels 115 dies de la batalla, a la construcció de trinxeres. A més, aquest Espai es troba al mig d’una zona natural (PEIN) que permet gaudir la natura, la fauna i un paisatge espectacular on els visitants podran descobrir els rius Ebre i Matarranya i el pantà de Riba – roja, mentre descobreixen vestigis de la Batalla de l’Ebre.
